Welcome!

Curious about worship at St. Paul’s?

We are a vibrant, Spirit-filled congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) located in Upper Northwest Washington, DC with a rich local history. St. Paul’s is also a Reconciling in Christ congregation.

I’m new to St. Paul’s!

Where is St. Paul’s located?

Located a short walk from either the Tenleytown-AU and Van Ness-UDC metro stops, Street parking is available on the streets surrounding the church, including Ellicott, Everett, and 36th streets. Handicapped parking is available in the small parking lot on the church property off of Ellicott Street.

The closest metro station is Van Ness-UDC on the Red Line. From the Van Ness metro station, walk 0.7 miles north on Connecticut Avenue and turn left on Ellicott Street. The church will be on your right. The L1 and L2 buses run regularly during the week as well as on weekends along Connecticut Avenue from the Van Ness station to Ellicott Street.

What is the worship experience like?

St. Paul’s is a lively gathering of God’s people around the Gospel-centered promise of grace, a “Reconciling in Christ” congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in NW Washington, DC. Communion is offered every Sunday service. The Musicians and Choir at St. Paul strive to create diverse and inclusive worship experiences that reflect the depth and breadth of our community. We offer a bridge between our cherished Lutheran tradition and vibrant contemporary musical expressions of faith. We invite you to join us as we find new musical pathways to God!

What types of people go to St. Paul’s?

All are Welcome! Some have even called us a motley band of courageous and quirky seekers. We are diverse in race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, age, theology, ability, politics, and socio-economic status.

Is there a dress code?

No! Our hope is that all worshipers will feel comfortable enough to participate in the liturgy at the level they desire. Just come and be yourself.

How does St. Paul’s relate to the surrounding community?

St. Paul’s offers a quiet place to worship and to serve God, and to hear beautiful music for all those who work in, live in, or visit our corner of Washington DC. We welcome all who are seeking a place where they will be accepted, affirmed and inspired. We offer weekly Communion at our Sunday Services, partner with the Capital Area Food Bank to provide food to those in need, host Prime Time Senior Center for area residents aged 55+, house the Auguste Montessori School, and provide rehearsal and meeting space for various organizations.

Do I have to be a member at St. Paul’s to participate in worship and community activities?

Absolutely not! But we would love for you to explore membership further as an opportunity for commitment to a faith community and as a chance for personal growth. If you have questions about membership or theology, please feel free to contact Pastor Walker.
